Breathing in. The first day of the workshop was dedicated to exploring our surroundings. We reconnoitered the village, walked up to the MVI Campus at Serré Lamboi, where a first net positive dwelling unit was being constructed as part of a projected multifunctional cluster of six buildings. Tobias Luthe explained the many facets of the MVI's mission and operations. Herta Peer, managing director of the Italian firm Casa Salute explained the principles behind sustainable and health wood-based construction. Ostana's mayor Giacomo Lombardo passed by and shared his vision on the challenges and future prospects for the village. On a meadow next to the campus participants had their first experience with flying drones, offering exciting vistas on Ostana's wider environment. Later on we descended again to our workshop room in the village's snug polyfunctional center to learn how the conceptual underpinnings of the view from above are reflected in the future scenario methodology. The workshop assignment focused on the development of a set of scenarios that visualised different possible futures for the high Po valley. Insights from the day were translated into a preliminary set of driving forces. The day was concluded with a tasty dinner at the Rifugio Galaberna.

This format has the potential to grow and support regular events for in-depth reflection and hands-on driven experience when it comes to community building and sustainability challenges in the Alps (and beyond) -- Roberto Perot, participant.
